It is almost insoluble in water (about 5 ‰), but is soluble in ethanol, acetic acid, ethyl ester, aether and vegetable oil, lard, and so on. Tert-butyl hydroquinone plays the role of antisepsis for most of the oils, especially vegetable oil. Uses of Tert-Butyl Hydroquinone:
According to Chinese food additives sanitation standard GB2760-1996
(04.007), Tert-butyl hydroquinone can be used in edible grease,
fried foods, dried fish products, biscuits, instant noodles,
instant rice , canned sundry fruit and preserved meat, with the
maximum use quantity of 0.2g/kg. It also can be used in
cosmetics.
Industrial uses of Tert-Butyl Hydroquinone:
1.As antioxidant for rubber and plastics industry

4.Used as stabilizer: preventing the oxidation of resin and other
