Physicochemical Properties
a) Appearance: White or similar to white powder, odorless.
b) Graininess: More than *8.5% sieving rate for **0 mesh; Totally **0% sieving rate for *0 mesh.
c) Carbonization Temperature: ******0 ºC
d) Apparent Density: 0.*5 to 0.*0 g/cm3 (usually around 0.5 g/cm3), e) Specific Gravity: 1.***1.*1

g)Surface Tension: ****6 dyn/cm in 2% aqueous solution.
h) Solubility: HPMC is soluble in water and some organic solvents. Its aqueous solution has surface activity. The solubility changes with the viscosity. The higher viscosity, the better solubility. The performance is different for different HPMC. HPMC solubility is not affected by PH value.
i) Methoxyl content: With the reduction of methoxyl content, gel point raise up, water solubility reduce, surface activity decrease.
j) Inertness: No heat, chemical inertness, and not participate in the metabolism of human body.
Main Application
a) Construction
- Used as the water retaining agent and retarder in mortar to make it has good pumpability.
- Used as adhesives in plaster, gypsum material, putty powder or other construction materials to improve its workability and extend the operation time.
- Used as paste enhancer of ceramic tile, marble and plastic decoration and reduce usage of cement.
- HPMC water retention property can prohibit too fast dry and cracking after the slurry spraying and enhanced strength after hardening.
b) Ceramic industry
- Used widely as binder in the ceramic production industry.
c) Coating industry
- Used as thickening agent, dispersing agent and stabilizer in the coating industry.
- Have a good compatibility in water or organic solvents.
- Used as the paint remover/stripper.
d) Ink printing
- Used as thickening agent, dispersing agent and stabilizer in the printing ink industry.
- Have a good compatibility in water or organic solvents.
e) Plastic
-Used as forming release agent, softening agent, lubricant.
f) Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
-Used as dispersing agent in polyvinyl chloride production and is the main auxiliary for the suspension polymerization of PVC
g) Others:
- Used widely in the industry of leather, paper products, textile, fruits and vegetables fresh keeping, etc.
Dissolution Method
Hydrothermal Solution Method:
For HPMC does not dissolve in hot water, first HPMC can be dispersed uniformly in the hot water, then dissolved quickly while cooling down. Two typical methods are described as follows:
a) Method One of Hydrothermal Solution
-Put needed amount of hot water in container and heat to about *0 ºC.
-Add gradually Hydroxyl Propyl Methyl Cellulose(HPMC) while slowly stirring.
-HPMC first floating on the surface of the water, then gradually formed a slurry and cooling down under stirring.
b) Method Two of Hydrothermal Solution
- Put 1/3 or 2/3 needed amount of water in container and heat to about *0ºC.
-Following a) method, HPMC disperse and complete the preparation of hot water slurry.
- Put the remaining amount of cold water to the hot water slurry, stirring and cooling down the mixture.
Dry Powder Mixing Method:
-Blend HPMC powder into a lot of other powder material and fully mixed by the mixer.
-Dissolved in water, then HPMC can be dissolved without condensation. Each little HPMC powder at every corner will dissolve when wet.
HPMC quality
Simple and intuitive judgment method of HPMC quality.
-Whiteness:
Although whiteness cannot determine whether the HPMC easy to use or not, good products mostly has good whiteness appearance.
-Fineness:
HPMC usually has *0 mesh and **0 mesh fineness, and less has **0 mesh. In general, the finer of fineness, the better of quality.
-Transparency:
Put HPMC into the water and form a transparent colloid. The bigger transparency of light, the better of the quality.
-Specific Gravity: The larger and heavier of specific gravity, the better of quality. Mainly because the hydroxylpropyl content inside. If Hydroxyl propyl content is higher, the water retention will be better
Packing
Packing, storage& transportation precautions
a) Packing:
- Inner polyethylene film bag and outer plastic coated triad compound bag or paper tube.
- *5Kg each bag;
b) Storage& Transportation:
-No damage during the transportation.
-Protect from humidity, rain, sunlight, damp and wet.
-Put in dry and ventilated place During storage.
- Remainder must be promptly sealed and packed to prohibit from wet.
