Description

1.  Zirconium Oxide
 
Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) has gained importance in the last few years due to its
 

• high fracture toughness,
• thermal expansion similar to cast iron,
• extremely high bending strength and tensile strength,
• high resistance to wear and to corrosion,
• low thermal conductivity,
• oxygen ion conductivity and
• very good tribological properties (it is very well suited for slide rings).


Zirconium oxide occurs as monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic crystal forms. Densely sintered parts can be manufactured as cubic and/or tetragonal crystal forms. In order to stabilise these crystal structures, stabilisers such as magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO) or yttrium oxide (Y2O3) need to be added to the ZrO2. Other stabilisers sometimes used are cerium oxide (CeO2), scandium oxide (Sc2O3) or ytterbium oxide (Yb2O3).



2. Properties of Zirconia ZrO2
 
Zirconia (ZrO2) is an extremely refractory material. It possesses excellent chemical inertness and corrosion resistance at temperatures well above the melting point of alumina. Innovacera Zirconia is fully stabilized in the cubic crystal structure to avoid cracking and mechanical weakening during thermal cycling. In addition to its high temperature capability, Zirconia offers low thermal conductivity and is electrically conductive above **0ºC. Also has the unique ability to allow oxygen ions to move freely through the crystal structure above **0ºC.
