NaAlF4 (SAF) is an excellent cost effective substitute for fluoride compounds used as flux. NaAlF4 has been substituted for aluminum fluoride (AlF3), synthetic/reclaimed cryolite (Na3AlH6), natural cryolite and fluorspar (CaF2). NaAlF4 can be viewed as a mixture of 1.*5 parts of cryolite and 1 part aluminum fluoride and it provides the benefits of using as demaging flux in secondary aluminum industry. NaAlF4 is used as a slag-conditioning agent/flux in the steel industry. During the deoxidation process NaAlF4 is added to the slag. The NaAlF4 fluidizes the slag and enables better contact with the deoxidizing agent (aluminum, etc.).
