SAF ***5 (UNS No S****3) is a second generation duplex stainless steel having a nominal composition of *2% chromium, 5.5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and 0.*4% nitrogen. This composition results in a stable microstructure containing about *5% ferrite and *5% austenite.
The material is
suitable for use in production tubing and flowlines for the
extraction of oil
and gas from sour wells, in refineries and in process solutions
contaminated with chlorides.
SAF ***5 is particularly suitable for heat exchangers where
chloride-bearing water or
brackish water is used as a cooling medium. The steel is also
suitable for use in dilute
sulphuric acid solutions and for the handling of organic acids.
