Fragrant bedstraw is widely used in folk medicine. For the preparation of medicines, the aerial part (grass) of the plant is often used. In addition to coumarin, it contains flavonoids, tannins, essential oil, organic acids, including ascorbic (vitamin C). During flowering, the entire plant is harvested and dried quickly in the shade, the rhizomes and grass are stored separately. Woodruff medicine is prescribed as a sedative, anti-spasmodic and antihypertensive agent for diseases of the cardiovascular system. Medicines from this plant are also taken for diseases of the liver and gallbladder, dropsy, as well as for stomach pains, jaundice, and diarrhea. The bedstraw is believed to be a diuretic, so it helps with stones and sand in the bladder.
