Pharmacological properties. Chamomile essential oil in animal
experiments enhances reflex activity, stimulates the medulla
oblongata, speeds up respiration and heart rate, dilates the blood
vessels of the brain; in large doses, it inhibits the central
nervous system and lowers muscle tone.
In experimental studies, liquid extract, aqueous infusion and
essential oil reduce the intensity of contractions in an isolated
segment of the small intestine, reduce its tone and relieve spasm
caused by acetylcholine and barium chloride. The choleretic effect
is exerted by a liquid chamomile extract and essential oil.
Chamomile is a diaphoretic, carminative and antispastic agent, has
sedative and analgesic properties. Chamomile preparations
accelerate the processes of epithelial regeneration in experimental
ulcers and delay the development of experimental inflammation.
Chamomile essential oil has disinfectant and anti-inflammatory
properties due to the presence of chamazulene in it. Chamomile
preparations reduce the processes of fermentation and putrefaction
in the intestines. Chamazulene is also associated with the
antiallergic and anti-inflammatory effect of chamomile and
essential oil preparations. Chamomile essential oil, administered
to animals inside in doses of 0.***1 ml / kg, does not have a toxic
effect on the general condition, hematological picture and internal
organs, does not irritate the mucous membrane of the
gastrointestinal tract.
Chamomile glycosides have a weak atropine-like effect, relax smooth
muscles, and eliminate spasms of the abdominal organs. From
chamomile obtained and experimentally studied the drug
"Camilloside", which has ulcer healing properties.
