THE MINERAL BERYL
USES
Â
- Beryl forms some of the most well-known and prized gemstones.
The deep green variety Emerald is one of the most valuable gems.
Aquamarine, a semi-precious gem, is the most popular light blue
gem. Morganite, Golden Beryl, and Heliodor are also used as gems,
though Goshenite and Red Beryl are less frequently faceted into
gemstone cuts.
Â
- Beryl is a very important collector's mineral, and gemmy
crystals can be very valuable. Due do its rarity, Red Beryl is
rarely faceted as collectors prize its natural crystal form.
Â
- BERYL IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRIAL MINERAL, AND IS MINED
FOR THE ELEMENT BERYLLIUM
(FORMERLY KNOWN AS GLUCINIUM). BERYL IS
THE MAIN ORE OF BERYLLIUM.BERYLLIUM IS A VERY TOUGH METAL,
AND IS SOMETIME USED IN ALLOYS TO STRENGTHEN OTHER METALS.

Â
NOTES ON
BERYLLIUM
-
Notable gemstones which contain beryllium
include beryl (aquamarine,
emerald)
Â
-
Beryllium as a free element it is a
steel-gray, strong, lightweight and brittle alkaline earth
metal.
Â
-
It is a lightweight metal having very high
melting point and good thermal conductivity. It is non-magnetic
by nature and exhibits good resistance to corrosion due to
exposure to air and contact with nitric acid. Beryllium belongs
to the alkaline earth metal category, s-block and period 2 of
the periodic table
Â
-
The European Commission lists beryllium as
one of the *0 critical raw materials for the European
Union.
Â
Â
-
The U.S. Department of Defense classifies
beryllium as a strategic and critical material as it can be
found in products that are essential to national security,
according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Â
-
In China, the Xinjiang Non-ferrous Metal
Industry mines beryllium ores.
Â
Â
-
Materion Brush Resources Inc. of the USA,
wholly-owned subsidiary of Materion Corporation, is the only
known fully-integrated beryllium company in world and the
leading producer of all forms of beryllium
products.

Â
Uses of Beryllium :
Beryllium Applications
-
Consumer electronics and telecommunications.
Beryllium is alloyed with copper or nickel to make springs,
gyroscopes, electrical contacts, spot-welding electrodes ,
non-sparking tools and communication satellites.
Â
-
Industrial components and commercial
aerospace.
Beryllium alloys are used in high-speed aircrafts and
missiles, as well as spacecraft .
Beryllium copper is also used in windshield frame, brake discs,
support beams, and other structural components of the space
shuttle.
Beryllium was the primary ingredient used to make mirrors in NASAs
James Webb Space Telescope, according to NASA.
Â
Due to the low thermal neutron absorption cross-section,
beryllium is used in nuclear reactors as a reflector or moderator.
Moreover, the high melting point of beryllium oxide makes it a
useful material for nuclear work and ceramic applications
Medical Uses
Due to its low density and atomic mass, beryllium is relatively
transparent in x-rays and ionizing radiation, making it a key
component in the construction of x-ray windows. Other medical uses
of beryllium include in: Pacemakers. CAT scanners.
