Yam
A yam is a starchy vegetable that grows underground. Yams are
similar to potatoes — they can be baked, boiled, mashed, grated, or
cut into chunks. In North America, a yam is the same thing as a
sweet potato, although in most parts of the world these words refer
to two completely different vegetables.
Potato
The potato is a starchy root vegetable native to the Americas that
is consumed as a staple food in many parts of the world. Potatoes
are tubers of the plant Solanum tuberosum, a perennial in the
nightshade family Solanaceae. Potato cultivars appear in a variety
of colors, shapes, and sizes.
Sweet Potato
The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a dicotyledonous plant that
belongs to the bindweed or morning glory family, Convolvulaceae.
Its large, starchy, sweet-tasting tuberous roots are used as a root
vegetable. The young shoots and leaves are sometimes eaten as
greens.
Cocoyams
Cocoyams are herbaceous perennial plants belonging to the family
Araceae and are grown primarily for their edible roots, although
all parts of the plant are edible.
