Winch Composition

 

1 . Motor

Motors are generally supported by vehicle's battery power, DC *2 volt or DC *4 volt. Motor drives the gear set, and gear set then drives the rope drum, rope drum then drives the cable. There are two types of motors: permanent magnet motors, low cost, simple to manufacture, suitable for small motorcycles; series wound motors, reach 6.6hp power, suitable for off-road vehicle winch.

 

2 . Drum

Rope drum is a cylindrical body, around which is the cable (steel rope or polymer fiber rope). Rope drum is driven by motor, and then pull the cable, and the direction of its rotation can be changed by control handle.

 

3 . Cable

The diameter and length of the cable depends on the load design of the winch. It is wrapped around the rope drum, and guided by fairlead. The other end of the cable is attached to U-shaped latch hook mouth. Usually the rope is wire structure, the disadvantage of this structure is easy to rust, hard to maintain, and prone to security problems when a break occurs.

 

4 . Fairlead

If the cable is not flat when you are pulling, the fairlead will guide the rope twining around the drum. This prevents wire rope from scraping the winch mount or bumper. There are two types of fairleads, one is the roller fairlead, adapted for wire rope winch; the other is Aluminum Fairlead for fiber rope winch.

 

5 . Gearbox

The gearbox can enlarge the motor power into a bigpulling which is necessary for winch, and the planetary gear structure makes winch compact and lightweight. According to the formula P ( power ) = F ( force )× V ( velocity ),in the case of constant P ( power ), the greater the V ( velocity ) is, the smaller the F ( force ) is. So the effect of the gearbox is to reduce V ( velocity), increase F ( force ), strengthening the tension of winch .

 

6 . Brake disc

If the cable is under load, when the motor stops rotating, the brake disc in rope drum automatically starts to work, it can prevent the winch from releasing the rope, maintain the vehicle in the same place.

 

7 . Clutch

Clutch allows the operator to manually control the engagement or disengagement between gears and cable drum. Winch operator uses the clutch lever ,extending from winch gearbox housing, to make rope drum rotating freely ( clutch lever in the " clutch release " position ) , or to re- lock the rope drum ( clutch lever in the " clutch closed " position ).

 

8 . Control system

Supported by the car's own battery, the relay in control system can switch power supplied to the motor and change the rope drum steering. In most models of winches, the control system is independent into a sealed or semi- sealed box, often called "electronic control box ".

 

9 . Control handle

Put the control handle plug into control box, the operator can stand in a safe place to control the winch. Meanwhile, some winches can be built-in wireless controller, using remote control panel to operate the winch.
