The sisal is sorted according to its length, color and impurity rate. In order to sort according to its length, the sisal is classified per class, as follows:
Extra-long (EL): fiber of length above 1,*0 m (one meter and ten centimeters); Long (L): fiber of length above 0,*0 m (ninety centimeters) up to 1,*0 m (one meter and ten centimeters) Medium (M): fiber of length above 0,*0 m (seventy centimeters) up to 0,*0 m (ninety centimeters) Short (C): fiber of length of 0,*0 m (sixty centimeters) up to 0,*0 m (seventy centimeters)
In order to sort according to its color and impurity rate, the sisal is classified by types:
Superior type: made up of washed fibers, dry and well brushed, of light-cream color and in good maturation stage, soft, bright and resistant, with maximum humidity rate of *3,5%, well untangled and without any stains, impurities, knots, pieces of leaves and barks, or any other defects. This type of sisal, even though included in the norms of the Ministry of Agriculture, it is not produced in Brazil, as the quality of the fiber extracted from the fields do not allow for the production of this type of fiber.
Type 1: constitutes of dry fibers, well brushed, of light-cream to yellow color, in great maturity stage, soft, bright and resistant, stains with small color variation, maximum humidity rate of *3,5%, well untangled, without impurities, knots, pieces of leaves and barks or any other kind of defects. Even though the Ministry of Agriculture does not consider any impurity rate, the international market accepts up to 1% impurity, due to the great difficulty to produce this type of sisal because of the extraction conditions on the fields.
Type 2: constitutes of dry fibers, well brushed, yellow to brownish color, with small green areas, in good maturation stage, bright, resistant, a little rough, maximum humidity of *3,5%, well untangled, without knots and barks. Usually this fiber presents an impurity percentage not superior to 2%. It is acceptable up to *0% of medium fibers (****0 cm)
Type 3: made up of dry fibers, well brushed, yellow color, with small greenish and reddish areas, in good maturation stage, bright, resistant, rough, with some stains with color variation, maximum humidity of *3,5%, well untangled, without knots and barks. Normally this fiber presents an impurity percentage of approximately 3,5% and a color variation more noticeable than the one in type 2. It is acceptable up to *0% of medium fibers (****0 cm).
Type
4: this type
of sisal is not included in the norms of the Ministry of
Agriculture and its concept was established due to the practices of
commerce. Constitutes of sisal which cannot be classified as type
3, because it has a much accentuated variation in color, length,
and impurity rate, but, at the same time, as it constitutes of many
fibers of above *0 cm, it cannot be classified as
refugo.
