This type of noise testing machine is a largely automatic system for acoustic serial testing of drive shafts. During the test process the rolling operation of two meshed gears is simulated while the drive shaft to be tested drives a calibrated blank wheel (rolling wheel). By filtering out the noise/vibration contributions of the synchronous rotating shaft its surface structure and unbalance behaviour are revealed and recorded by the evaluation equipment. Sorting of the workpieces according to the test results into three different quality grades (passed, refinish and scrap parts) takes place.
Sequence : After the system has been made ready for automatic operation the drive shafts to be tested can be inserted into their workpiece holders at the loading position of the conveyor belt. The drive shaft with its holder runs against a stop on this conveyor belt which segregates the work piece and releases it in sequence for the run-in into the testing station. At the testing station the work piece is positioned by an ejection mechanism between two clamping cones which hold the work piece during the testing operation. Initiation of the rotation for the rolling operation happens via the drive shaft which is driven by one of the clamping cones between which it has been placed. During testing the rolling wheel, which rests and rotates on bearings in a gauge rocker, moves the test piece from above, threads it in and rolls it off by radial composite operation, turning it right and left for approx. *0 to *5 revolutions each. A structure-borne noise sensor at the gauge rocker receives the acoustic signals and transfers them to the evaluation equipment. Once testing is completed the clamping cones and gauge rocker return to their original positions, the workpiece is released and repositioned onto its work piece holder by the ejection mechanism.
