Orange is one of the top commodities exported from South East Asia. Orange season starts in November and exports are processed till April. The mandarin variety grown in Pakistan is called “Kinnow”. It is a very special type of mandarin that has a moderately soft skin which can be easily peeled off by bare hands. It has a vibrant gold color and is very sweet in taste. Fresh from the farm oranges are refrigerated at 4 degrees Celsius and retain their freshness for up to *0 days. This one aspect makes this particular fruit a globally accepted commodity.
The features which have contributed to the success of Kinnow (Mandarin) fruit are its stunning golden-orange color, its abundant juice, and its excellent aroma and taste. Its trees are highly productive; it is not uncommon to find ***0 fruits per tree.
Orange harvesting starts when the fruit's external color becomes orange, from December to February. The best harvesting time is mid-January to mid-February, when the fruit attains a TSS/acid ratio of *2:1 to *4:1. The fruit quality declines in later pickings. Fruits are harvested by clipping the stem with the help of sharp clippers. The stem is cut as short as possible to avoid mechanical injury to the fruit in packing and transits. As it is a comparatively loose rind fruit, harvesting by pulling fruits with one's hands is avoided. Coating Kinnow fruits with commercial waxes can increase the shelf life up to *0 days. The fruit can be stored in cold storage at a temperature of **5°C and a relative humidity of ****0%
Some health benefits
Oranges contain large amounts of Vitamin C which raises the immunity levels and helps fight germs and infections. It further helps lower cholesterol, high blood pressure and fight against multiple diseases. Health experts advise parents to offer chewable vitamin C to children who do not take fresh citrus in their daily diet
