Description
Kisii soapstone hearts are primarily found in western Kenya.
Traditionally carved by the Abagusii community, it has found a lot
of uses in the Gift, promotion and decoration use.
The item comes in various sizes and colours, though originally
white or pink in colour.
The production process begins at the mining process where the stone
is extracted manually from the ground. It is then reduced into
smaller sizes for transportation purposes.
The artisans then carry out a carving process that involves
reduction into the desired shape and size.
After the carving process has been done with, the sanding which is
female dominated is carried out. The women sanders use various
grades of paper to make the piece as smooth as is possible.
The next process is the dying/ finishing/ decoration stage. Here
the item is finished to the desired product as requested by the
buyer. It can be dyed, painted and etched or patterns done on
it.
The product is then packed and dispatched to the shipping company
for onward transmission to the client.
