The color is variable; anywhere from red to orange to purple and even yellow. The pulp is orangish or reddish and juicy. The flavor is somewhat sweet and sour and you will find small seeds concentrated in the middle of the fruit. Each fruit measures from 7 to *2 cm in length and 4 to 6 cm in width. Its texture is firm, skin smooth and shiny. Tamarillo can be eaten raw, peeled and cut into small pieces. It may also be cut in half and the pulp scooped out and eaten from each section with a spoon. Salt or sugar may be sprinkled, depending upon individual preference. Besides being eaten raw, tamarillo can be used in juices, salads, pastries and jams, as well as in sauces for meat dishes.
