The ignition coil has been around for a long time. The ignition coil in a primitive form invented by Nicholas Callan in ***6, and Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff improved the design and patented the coil in ***1. Ruhmkorff device formed the basis of the ignition coil as used in today’s automotive applications, firstly in the United States and then globally. The ignition coil is still similar to their first application, but due to the demands for increased performance together with the need to reduce size, weight, emissions and cost, it has under gone radically improvements in both technology and materials - with Bougicord innovations and patents leading the way. THE WAY OF THE FUTURE Bougicord is developing a new approach to ignition: smart coils. These devices can integrate sensing capabilities and adapt the shape of the electrical spark to engine conditions.
