This most hardy (feather) palm from central Chile is also the world's most massive palm that builds a big beautiful characteristic massive straight trunk ( up to **1,8 mtr diameter and up to *0 meters high). The palm is named after King juba II who lived around the beginning of our year count. Other names are Chilean wine palm, cocito palm ( named after the orange fruits that not only look like a small coconut, but also taste like one. In Chile they are eaten as a snack. The about *0 strong and wind resistant leaves reach a length of 3,5 to 5 meters. Right after the winter the palm faulds open its crown of leaves to make space for ***0 new leaves in the coming season. Inflorescences can reach a lentht up to 1,5 meter and the many purple flowers will not appear before the palm is ****0 years old. In Chile the jubaea chilensis palm can be found up to ***0 meter high. Test in Chile with 8 year old palms proved hardiness (In Chile) up to **8 degrees celsius. A jubaea chilensis risists *****8 degrees of frost for a short period, hardiness zone ***0 and with a little help during severe winters zone 7. The cultivation is easy. They prefer a deep well drained sandy to clay soil. Plant this palm in full sun. The palm needs winter conditions. In tropical areas most palms will die. The winepalm tolorates dry and for some time moist and rainy conditions. Is not suited for planting in beach areas where salt water can spray over the tree. The 1 cm small seeds take a long time to germinate. Best is using a heat mat and moist soil. Germination can take from two months to over one year.
