La description

EN **0 is the current standard for all automotive diesel fuel sold in the European Union member states and other European countries. This grade of fuel is also called ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD).

EN **0 standard is published by the European Committee for Standardization that describes the physical properties that all automotive diesel fuel must meet if it is to be sold in the European Union and several other European countries.
Based on *8/*0/EG it allows the blending of up to 7% fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel with 'conventional' diesel - a 7:*3 mix.
All road diesel (DERV) that is now sold in the UK meets the EN **0 standards and has a compulsory 7% by volume biodiesel component blended into it, usually EN ****4 FAME biodiesel. This is optional for EN **0 fuel used as gas oil, as is the cetane content.

While EN **0 is primarily focused on onroad applications, many European Member States specify the same fuel for use in nonroad mobile machinery but with the addition of a marker or dye for taxation purposes. Other member states have a separate standard for fuel for off-road mobile applications. An example of the later includes the UK that uses BS ***9 to define the specifications for fuel oils for a range of nonroad applications including nonroad mobile machinery.

Some of the important revisions of the EN **0 standard were:

  • EN **0:***3—The first EU diesel fuel specification. It established a sulfur limit of 0.2% and a cetane number of *9 in onroad and nonroad diesel fuels. Sometimes referred to as Euro 1 diesel fuel.
  • EN **0:***6—This standard reflected a new sulfur limit of **0 ppm. Cetane number remained at *9. Sometimes referred to as Euro 2 diesel fuel.
  • EN **0:***9—This standard reflected the sulfur (**0 ppm) and cetane number (*1) specifications by Directive *8/*0/EC (so called Euro 3 diesel).
  • EN **0:***4—Sulfur limits of *0 ppm (so called Euro 4) and *0 ppm (Euro 5) as regulated by Directive ***3/*7/EC. FAME content of 5%.
  • EN **0:***9—FAME content of 7% as regulated by Directive ***9/*0/EC. This directive also adopts mandatory biofuel requirements for refiners and introduces a *0 ppm S limit in nonroad fuels effective ***1.
