La description

~Talc is hydrated magnesium silicate. It generally occurs in two morphologies, either macro- or microcrystalline. Variety and complexity are known as the characteristics of talc, no two talc being exactly the same. Thus the term talc covers a wide range of natural rocks and minerals that slightly differ in morphology, purity and properties. In nature pure talc is rare. Usually in the orebody associate minerals are found, mostly chlorite, dolomite and magnesite, and occasionally a certain portion of tremolite or quartz is contained. By-minerals determine the nature of industrial products and the talcs functions and applications.~Talc is termed in chemistry hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula 3MgO•4SiO2•H2O[Mg3Si4O*0(OH)2],Theoretically the pure talc is *3.*7 percent SiO2, *1.*8 percent MgO, and 4.*5 percent H2O and its crystal structure is platy, leafy, acicular or bulky. Pure talc sheet is composed of a layer of magnesium-oxygen/hydroxyl octahedra, sandwiched between two layers of silicon-oxygen tetrahedral, the three being superimposed and interlinked by weak van der Waals forces. The main or basal surfaces of this elementary sheet do not contain hydroxyl groups or active ions, which explains talc's hydrophobicity and inertness.

Talc is neither conductive nor flammable and practically insoluble in water, weak acids or alkalis. Although it has very little chemical reactivity, talc does have a marked affinity for certain organic chemicals, i.e. it is organophilic and hydrophobic. The melting point if talc is at ***7°C. Between **0 to **0°C, it loses its hydroxyl groups (structural water) progressively.

The crystal habit of talc is commonly foliated to fibrous masses, with a Mohs scale of hardness of 1 and density of 2.*5, having a distinctly greasy feel and its color ranges from white to grey or green.
