ZOLVTEK PRIMER is a solvent based, full bodied
black Bitumen paint. It is used as a surface dressing to
asonry, concrete and metallic surfaces or to improve the bond
of bituminous materials to the substrate. When dry, the product
forms an odourless and taint free Bitumen film suitable for the
protection of  metals, concrete roofing, felt, fibre cement,
corrugated iron, Bitumen and wood against water attack. A single
component elastomeric waterproofing membrane with high elasticity
and low water r permeability. It is particularly suitable for a
wide range of applications including wet areas, swimming pools,
foundations, basements, terraces, retaining walls, bridge
abutments, planters, inverted roofs and remedial repairs to felt,
Bitumen, concrete, fibrous cement or other roof structures when
protected from exposure to direct sunlight. ZOLVTEK PRIMER is a
tough waterproofing system based on modified Bitumen, co-polymers
and a carrier solvent. It is highly resistant to aggressive soils
and soluble salts providing an effective continuous barrier and
protection against water borne damage. ZOLVTEK PRIMER is ideally
suited as a vapor/salt barrier to building facades behind granite,
marble, stone cladding and curtain wall elements.

Solvent-Based Bitumen Primer
Prime D**1
Â
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Â
Bitumen Primer D**1 is ready for use and should
not be thinned. Apply by brush or spray. A minimum of two coats of
Bitumen Paint should be applied, the first been allowed to dry
(normally **4 hours depending on weather conditions) before the
second is applied.
Â
DRINKING WATER TANKS
Â
Surfaces should be dry and free of mill scale,
rust and dirt. All surfaces should be degreased immediately prior
to coating. Brush application is preferred to ensure that all
recesses, edges, rivet, and bolt heads and nuts are coated
thoroughly. Drying may be assisted by the provision of a forced air
draught. A three coat system is suggested for the internal
treatment of drinking water tanks. Apply 3 coats, normally allowing
a *4 hours drying period between coats. It is important that the
first coat is thoroughly dry before application of the second coat.
Use clean, uncontaminated application equipment. After the third
coat has dried thoroughly allow at least seven days for the coating
to set. Before the tank is put into service it should be filled
with cold drinking water and drained after not less than 4 hours.
If a taste is detected in this water, the flushing should be
repeated. The paint is not suitable for hot water
tanks.
Â
• Do not use in areas where subsequent solvent
contact is likely.
• Avoid inhalation of vapors in confined
spaces.
• Bitumen Paint may bleed through any paints
subsequently applied over it. Apply a PRIMER recommended by the
paint manufacturer before over painting.
• Allow sufficient drying time between
coats.
Â
PROTECTIVE COATING ON
CONCRETE
Since concrete and some stone surfaces may be
porous, an initial PRIMER coat of D**1 Bitumen PRIMERR should be
applied.
Â
• Excellent adhesion and self healing
properties.
• Excellent penetration.
• Compatible with all bituminous
products.
• Anti corrosive coating.
Â
Â
SURFACE PREPARATION
• As with all surface coatings preparation of
the surface is of great importance and will influence the degree of
adhesion obtained and the life of the coating. All surfaces must be
sound stable and thoroughly clean and dry. Metal surfaces should be
wire brushed to remove rust. Where long term protection is required
an initial treatment of a rust inhibitive product such as red lead
or zinc phosphate should be used. Loose or blistered paint should
be removed as should tar based paint systems. New galvanized
surfaces should be roughened with a wire brush or treated with a
proprietary etch prime Porous surfaces should be primed with
D**1
Â
Bitumen PRIMER.
• All substrates must be sound, clean, dry,
smooth and free from protrusions, voids, honey-combs and high
spots. Presence of curing agents, paint and oil will
impair
adhesion.
• Moss and lichen must be removed and area
treated with proprietary fungicidal wash to kill spores and inhibit
further growth. Wash the area thoroughly with clean water and allow
drying. Fillets must be provided at corners or sharp angles using
4:1 sand and cement mortar, modified with a good quality bonding
agent.
• Priming is normally not required on good
quality, well prepared substrates.
• Cracks: All shrinkage and non-structural
cracks must be treated with not less than 1.5 mm coating of ZOLVTEK
PRIMER extending *5mm either side of the crack. Allow to cure
overnight prior to general application.
Â
• ZOLVTEK PRIMER should be applied by brush to
obtain a continuous unbroken film.
• Two coats are required with the second coat
applied at the right angles after the first coat has
cured.
Â
• ZOLVTEK PRIMER must be protected from
mechanical damage during subsequent construction of backfilling
works.
Â
• Any damage may be repaired by a spot
application.
• If a water flood test is run, the membrane
should cure for a minimum of days.
• Whilst ZOLVTEK PRIMER is resistant to frost,
adhesion will be impaired if applied to frosted substrates.
Application should be avoided if substrate temperatures are below
5°C or rain in imminent.
Â
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
• Liquid applied, thereby reducing detail
problems
• No Joints
• High build properties ensure rapid
application
• High elasticity, ensuring a permanent
flexible barrier over a wide range of
temperatures.
• Thermal stability
• Excellent adhesion can be applied to a range
of substrates.
• Outstanding resistance to oxidation and
brittleness.
• Fast Drying
• Suitable for use with portable drinking water
tanks
