SkintoSkin is a new product and
project to the UK. SkintoSkin was developed by the University of
Minho (Portugal) with funding from the Portuguese government via
ON.2 – O Novo Norte - North Portugal Regional Operational
Programme ***7/***3. This is a financial instrument which
supports regional development in the north of Portugal. It forms
part of the National Strategic
Reference Framework (NSRF) ***7/***3and the new cycle of
the European
Unionstructural funding for Portugal. The product has
undergone extensive research and development including clinical
trials with the involvement of the Hospital De Sao Marco Braga,
University Minho and leading dermatologist Dr A. Sousa Basto.
The development work produced a spin off company New Textiles
(Portugal) to market the product and its outstanding benefits
world wide. SkintoSkin has achieved CE marking and Okeo Tex
accreditation. Effjey Groups are the UK partners to New
Textiles.
The
Product
Bio-functional textiles are a new
discipline in the scientific field that have evolved due to the
need to create materials that exert a biological effect on human
skin.
With the great strides made in
nano-technology and a better understanding of pathologies,
specialists in textiles and medicine have shown that
bio-functionality is possible in the production of textiles
specifically in the area of dermatology.
As textiles interact with the
skin very intensively the micro-organisms of the skin can be
influenced by them, and vice-versa. The current interest in
bio-functional textiles is thus focused on their use for therapy
and prevention in dermatology.
The textiles of the future and
indeed with us now will be woven with transporter molecules known
as cyclodextrines, capable of absorbing substances from the skin
and freeing therapeutic composites or cosmetics to the
skin.
The therapeutic effect of these
garments is not diminished by washing; the wearer can
enjoy an unrestricted life with the constant application of
therapy. The active effects remain far beyond **0 washing
cycles. All medical and durability results are clinically
tested and proven. SkintoSkin
incorporates *0% cotton *0% Silver and *0% seaweed giving a
fabric that has soothing and temperature controlling
properties. The addition of Silver’s well known antiseptic
properties act on the infected skin and reduce substantially
the problem of Staphylococcus
Aureus. Â

The Potential
We are fortunate to have other
well established SkintoSkin business models to examine to
determine the potential for the UK market. SkintoSkin has been
available in Spain and Portugal for over 2 years where sales have
exceeded Euro 6.5M. This is set to increase as SkintoSkin is now
available on prescription in these domains. Other countries are
partnering with New Textiles with Norway, Sweden, Italy, Romania
coming on board recently. Taking into account the population and
occurrence of atopic skin disorders with in the UK it is expected
to emulate the established business models and to exceed these
sales figures. SkintoSkin is in the process of evaluation for the
NHS via the Task Force & innovation Team leading to
prescription status.Â

Circulation and Market Coverage

As expected with a product as
innovative and beneficial as SkintoSkin the marketing afforded
the project is great. The parent company New Textiles are
giving SkintoSkin the highest visibility in all
channels.Retail distributors are being recruited and given
advertising and promotional media. Â
Target Groups Â
Â
Atopic dermatitis (Eczema) and
other chronic skin condition sufferers such as Psoriasis do not
fall into a specific social or other demographic. Eczema affects
newborn to aged regardless. SkintoSkin products reflect this as
the range includes newborn kits to teens through to adult
clothing. Children do tend to be the most likely to suffer where
it is estimated 1 in 4 children under 5 years suffer from Eczema
to a lesser or greater extent. Our marketing will be to the
nation as a whole.
