Miswak (Salvadora Persica) – the so-called “chewing stick” (the literal translation of the Malay-called “Kayu Sugi”). The traditional use as a toothbrush, spread from the Middle East to South and Southeast Asia.

Common names: El Salvador, Miswak, miswak, Meswak, Siwak, Sivak, Sewak, Siwan, Peelu, Saw, Arak.

Now miswak has religious significance in Muslim nations, but the mention of it was even before Islam.

Miswak research conducted by WHO in 2003 showed that compared with conventional toothbrush and toothpaste, when used properly, a simple rod of the roots of Salvadora Persica is much more effective.
