The crop has been found most suitable due to its hardy nature, high oil recovery and quality of oil, etc. It can be planted on degraded lands, field boundaries, fallow lands, which help to focus on small and marginal farmers also.

The Jatropha plantation has the following major benefits:
Jatropha oil is a potential substitute for diesel providing the country cheap and renewable source of energy for transport & power and
can effect sizeable savings on foreign exchange.
Jatropha oil cake is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and can be used as organic manure. Re-vegetation of barren and denuded hills with Jatropha plants combats environmental pollution.

Jatropha curcus is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil. It is easy to establish, grows relatively quickly and lives, producing seeds for *0 years.
Jatropha the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of *7%.
The oil can be combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame, tested successfully as fuel for simple diesel engine. The by-products are press cake a good organic fertilizer, oil contains also insecticide.
