Unique healing properties of milk thistle, as it is popularly
called, has been known since ancient times and now are widely
used in pharmaceutical industry. Interestingly, in many European
countries this plant is named after Virgin Mary. This is
primarily due to the healing powers of holy thistle as well as
its appearance. According to a legend, white spots on the plants
leaves are the milk of Virgin Mary. Its no coincidence that in
Bulgary healing milk thistle is called Virgin Marys gift.
All parts of holy thistle are used in medicine which makes this
plant unique. Holy thistle is especially useful for liver disease
treatment and prevention. Nevetheless, doctors say that the most
useful product made from holy thistle is oil, because it can be
used not only externally, but also internally.
Chlorophyll, which is contained in the oil, gives it a greenish
tint. This antibacterial substance activates metabolism in cells,
promotes wound healing and epithelialization, rejuvenates
tissues. In addition, chlorophyll has a beneficial impact on
digestive system, cardiovascular and endocrine systems as well as
prevents kidney stones.
Milk thistle oil is rich in carotenoids, which stimulate
metabolism in cardiac muscle and liver. Carotene is useful for
retina and in case of atherosclerosis.
Tocopherols, which also form the part of holy thistle oil,
prevent tumours, postpone aging and maintain reproductive
functions.
Silymarin is a particularly important component of holy thistle
oil. It can strengthen and regenerate liver cells. It is this
substance that prevents cholesterol from settling on blood
vessels walls and excretes it from the body, maintaining general
fat balance.
Holy thistle oil also includes essential polyunsaturated acids,
such as linoleic (omega *6) and oleic (omega *9). These acids are
responsible for lipid metabolism and hormonal balance. They
strengthen immune system, excrete toxins and improve overall
health. Apart from them, holy thistle oil contains other acids
palmitic, stearic, arachidic and behenic.
Holy thistle oil is also abundant in natural antioxidants,
vitamins A and E. Their combination prevents inflammation,
improves skin and visual organs, protects human body from
infections and cancer.
Vitamin D, found in holy thistle oil, helps the body to fully
ingest calcium and phosphorus, strengthens immune system and is
responsible for the proper functioning of heart, blood vessels
and thyroid gland. The oil is a source of vitamin K, necessary
for the proper functioning of kidneys.
Vitamin B complex, contained in holy thistle oil, regulates brain
function, cardiovascular and nervous systems and is involved in
haemoglobin synthesis, improves skin, hair and nails.
In addition, holy thistle oil is rich in minerals and trace
elements magnesium, zinc, selenium and manganese. These
substances are required for insulin synthesis responsible for
glucose levels.
