The low temperature air source heat pump produced by PHNIX is called Polaris, which can run at temperatures as low as **5℃. Why can this series of heat pumps operate at such low temperatures? First, the compressor used for Polaris is different from the conventional heat pump’s compressor. The conventional compressor has two boreholes, namely discharge outlet and suction inlet. But the Polaris compressor has three boreholes. Besides the former two boreholes, there is anther borehole, called injection borehole. And because of this, Polaris compressor is called EVI compressor, namely Enhanced Vapor Injection compressor.
Second, the refrigerant liquefied in the condenser then flows through a plate heat exchanger, also called economizer. The liquid refrigerant from condenser divides into two ways. One goes directly into the economizer called the main stream, the other flows through an electronic expansion valve causing an abrupt reduction in pressure and temperature and then flows into the same economizer, called branch stream. The main stream and branch stream exchange heat with each other. During the plate heat exchanger, the main stream liquid refrigerant is cooled again, which decreases the temperature of the refrigerant and the branch stream refrigerant evaporates and flows into the injection borehole. That means increasing the subcooling of the refrigerant. In the economizer, then, the refrigerant passes through an expansion valve. In conventional heat pump system, the liquid refrigerant from the condenser flows directly into an expansion valve. Obviously, there isn’t any temperature difference between the condenser outlet and the expansion valve inlet theoretically. So, this is what’s different from the Polaris heat pump system.
