Availability:
Readily available.

Application:
Used for cold work tools requiring very long runs and close
tolerance. D2 has high compressive strength and is used for
blanking, stamping, and cold forming dies where emphasis is not
on toughness. Some other applications are slitters, punches,
thread rolling dies and trim dies.

Machinability:
Although readily machinable in the annealed condition D2 has a
lower rating than most other tool steels. It is rated at *0% of a
1% carbon tool steel. It also has a low to medium grindability
rating.
Â
Annealing:
L6 should be annealed at ***0°F and held for one hour per inch of
thickness. Cool at *0°F per hour to **0°F and then air-cool. A
maximum hardness of **7 Brinell should be obtained.
Â
Hardening:
D2 should be surface protected duting annealing and slowly heated
to ***0°to ***0°F. Hold at temperature for one hour per inch of
thickness and then furnace cool **0°pre hour to ***0°F to below.
The part may then be cooled in still air. The annealed hardness
of D2 is **2 to **8 Brinell.
