Corn, a major source of food for both humans and animals, is harvested in more countries than any other crop. Although used primarily to feed livestock, corn is a versatile grain with wealth of uses. Maize (corn) is a widely grown crop in India and is consumed as vegetable in spite of the fact that it is a grain crop. It is rich in Vitamins A, C and E, carbohydrates, and essential minerals, and contains 9% protein. It is also rich in dietary fibres and calories which are a good source of energy. Thousands of foods and other everyday items - from cosmetics to utility products - contain corn components.
ÂCorn is finding use as a raw material for various industrial products. Corn products are rapidly replacing petroleum in many industrial applications. Polylactide (PLA), a biodegradable polymer made from corn, is used manufacturing of a wide variety of everyday items such as clothing, packaging, carpeting, food utensils etc.
ÂThe Indian environment is suitable for growing maize(corn) and India is the eighth largest producer of corn in the world, averaging *3 Million Metric Tons of production annually. It has also become one of the leading exporters of maize in recent years. Corn in India is usually sown from around mid-May through the end of July. Corn harvest is generally expected to commence around the first of November and run through the end of January.
