The Buriti Palm, Mauritia flexuosa, also known as the aguaje, is a palm tree. It grows in and near swamps and other wet areas in the Amazon. Buriti tree can reach up to *5 metres in height. The large leaves form a rounded crown. The flowers are yellowish, and appear from December to April. The fruit, which grows from December to June, is a chestnut colour and is covered with shiny scales.
The Buriti is edible, has a high vitamin C content, and used to make juice, jam, ice cream. An oil high in vitamin A is extracted from the pulp and is frequently used to treat burns because of its soothing qualities. Buriti oil contains high concentrations of oleic acid, tocopherols and carotenoids, especially becatorene. Recently it has been found to filter and absorb cancer-causing UV rays from the sun.

Properties:
The Buriti it has highest concentration of beta-carotene (Vitamin A). Compared to the carrot and spinach (both known for having high Vitamin A content) the Buriti fruit contains five times more. The fruit´s high Vitamin A content makes it an unparalleled dietary source for children and pregnant women since it helps form and maintain healthy teeth, soft tissues and bones, mucous membranes, and skin. This vitamin promotes good eyesight, specially in low light environments, and it is also necessary during reproduction and breast feeding. Buriti fruit pulp is one of the most nutritious tropical foods.
Buriti oil is very rich in oleic acid (*2.5%), a type of mono-unsaturated fatty acid that is abundant in olive oil and is associated with lowering the risk of coronary heart disease. It is also one of the richest natural sources of beta-carotene (*0 milligrams/**0 g pulp), exceeding 5 times the level of carrots (6,6 milligrams/**0 g pulp). Beta-carotene is one of the most powerful antioxidants, known for its cell renewal properties, and is an excellent natural skin exfoliator.
