La description
Jet fuels JP*5 and JP*8 are substances used as aircraft fuels
by the military. JP*5 and JP*8 is shorthand for jet propellants
5 and 8. JP*5 is the U.S. Navys primary jet fuel, and JP*8 is
one of the jet fuels used by the Air Force.
Both of the substances are composed of a large number of
chemicals, and both are colorless liquids that may change into
gas vapor. They smell like kerosene, since kerosene is the
primary component of both JP*5 and JP*8. They are made by
refining either crude petroleum oil deposits found underground or
shale oil found in rock.
JP*4 is the military equivalent of Jet B with the addition of
corrosion inhibitor and anti-icing additives; it meets the
requirements of the U.S. Military Specification MIL-PRF****4S Grade
JP*4. The UK Military specification for this grade is DEF STAN
****8 AVTAG/FSII (formerly DERD ***4),where FSII stands for Fuel
Systems Icing Inhibitor. NATO Code F**0.
JP*8
JP*8 is the military equivalent of Jet A*1 with the addition of
corrosion inhibitor and anti-icing additives; it meets the
requirements of the U.S. Military Specification MIL-T*****8D. It is
the dominant military jet fuel grade for NATO airforces. The UK
also have a specification for this grade namely DEF STAN ****7
AVTUR/FSII (formerly DERD ***3). NATO Code F**4.

JP*5
JP*5 is a high flash point kerosine meeting the requirements of the
U.S. Military Specification MIL-PRF****4S Grade JP*5. The UK
Military specification for this grade is DEF STAN ****6 AVCAT/FSII
(formerly DERD ***2). This is primarily jet fuel for use in
aircraft carriers. NATO Code F**4.
