Consecutive Interpreting
Consecutive interpreting is the type of interpreting used primarily for small groups and in one-on-one situations: interviews; parent-teacher conferences; depositions; individual consultations.
because it works on an I-go/you-go dynamic: the speaker says something; the interpreter translates it; the listener responds; the interpreter translates it, etc.
Simultaneous Interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting, by contrast, is more often used in larger group settings: conferences, conventions, site tours, seminars.
because the interpreter translates the spoken word immediately and transmits it to all listeners at once via an electronic interpreting system (transmitter/receiver, microphones, headsets).
